The Problem with Resiliency

The problem with resiliency is that we have to have it at all. It’s sad truly if you think about the things that have to happen in order to be seen as resilient. Why? Because to bounce back and be resilient, things must have happened to bounce back from.

So yeah, resiliency is a good thing to have. It’s a great trait, sure. But there’s grief in resiliency. There’s loss and pain in resiliency.

I’m not resilient because nothing bad has happened to me. I’m resilient because of death, illness, cruelty, mental anguish. I’m resilient because if I wasn’t, I wouldn’t be here.

Resiliency is Dory from Finding Nemo, “just keep swimming” because if we don’t keep swimming, we’ll sink.

Art keeps me resilient. Think about anything you want to see, you can paint or draw. A bird with gorilla arms. A chipmunk with a deer head. A cat with wings of an eagle. Bright colors. Words that bring meaning. Earthy tones that convey tranquility. The creativity keeps me going on days that I can’t sit in my head. I have

to work on something, create.

What keeps you going when you feel like you simply can’t?
